Give the Experience 2021: Interview with Martha Buehner

By Ifeoma AkobiĀ

October 19, 2021

Martha Buehner retired six years ago after teaching first grade for 53 years. Now, she and her husband regularly volunteer with the Presidential Site.

Q: How did you got connected with the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site?

A: For 20 years, I brought my first grade classes to the BHPS on field trips where the students participated in the excellent Wooden Soldier educational programs. Roger [Hardig] eventually began teasing me that I could give a house tour myself after so many years of bringing my students. Fifteen years ago, I took Roger up on his teasing and became a docent.

Q: What has been your most significant experience with the Presidential Site?

A: While I was teaching, I volunteered on weekends once a month. After retiring, I now enjoy giving yours each Thursday to different people and sharing the history about President Harrison and his beautiful house. My husband and I also volunteer at special events. My most significant experience with the home is working the past 6 years helping Roger with the Future Presidents of America program.

Q: What future experiences do you look forward to at BHPS?

A: I continue looking forward to working with the outstanding Future Presidents of America leadership program with Roger.

Q: What do you think about Give the Experience 2021?

A: Give the Experience 2021 is a worthwhile opportunity for BHPS friends and the community to help expand opportunities for more children, youths and adults to experience this great piece of American history.
